Fragments of Memory II
Fiber & Denim Art Series

Fragments of Memory II continues Jaclyn Bae’s exploration of memory, time, and transformation through recycled denim. Each piece of fabric once carried someone’s warmth, movement, and unseen moments — remnants of everyday life. Through bleaching, disassembling, cutting, and re-stitching, the artist reconstructs fragments into new visual forms that reflect the layered nature of remembrance.

The work meditates on how memories fade, overlap, and renew over time — much like threads that unravel and reconnect. What was once ordinary becomes a quiet landscape of reflection, where the past and present weave into a new fabric of meaning. Visually, "Fragments of Memory II" resembles an abstracted, ghost-like tree or an ancient, unearthing root system. This white and gray monochromatic palette, achieved through the bleaching of the indigo denim, symbolizes the fading of vivid, original memory into a neutral, timeless state.

The dense, relief-like texture of the collage creates a topographical map of emotional experience, where certain "fragments" stand out in high relief, representing pivotal memories, while others recede, smoothed by the passage of time.

The artist's meticulous process of deconstruction and reconstruction acts as a powerful metaphor for the immigrant experience, where the cultural threads of the past must be intentionally rewoven to form a new, stable identity in the present.
