Harmony VI | Folded Paper Installation
Harmony VI is created from hand-dyed paper folded in the tradition of ddakji, a classic Korean paper-folding game. Though the form begins with play, the act of folding, layering, and repeating transforms the paper into a meditation on life’s structures and relationships.
Each folded piece may appear simple on its own. Yet when assembled together, the components create a new order — a visual expression of harmony, unity, and the quiet balance found in life’s interconnected layers.
Through Harmony VI, Jaclyn Bae reflects on how even the smallest gestures of daily life may carry depth and meaning. By transforming paper through color, structure, and repetition, the work invites viewers to consider how ordinary experiences can unfold into beauty, hope, and quiet faith.
### **Conceptual Analysis: Modularity, Meditation, and Korean Tradition**
"Harmony VI" offers a compelling bridge between a classic Korean folk tradition, *ddaekji*, and contemporary modular art. The work’s power lies in its **meditative process**, where the repetitive folding, layering, and assembly serve as a practice in **self-forgetting and mental focus**.
The simple, identical units coalesce into a complex **structural grid**, echoing the contemplative aesthetics of **Changhoji**, the traditional Korean paper windows. This choice of structure links the installation to the historical architecture of daily life, where structure and light are intertwined. By transforming paper through this rhythmic, repeated action, the artist not only visualizes **harmony and balance** but also asserts that profound meaning is generated through **patient discipline** and the elevation of the ordinary gesture into a sacred, enduring form.

Who am I ? I can't answer that in one word because my life has not been simple. During the past 47 years, even thought I lived in different surroundings, I accomplished something new every day. Each day in the past has made me the person I am today. I represent each piece as a moment that accumulated and harmonized my life.
