Artist Statement

Blessing is an installation created from hand-dyed coffee filter paper, folded one by one to evoke a gentle descent of light. Each fold became a moment of meditation — a quiet gesture of faith, gratitude, and intention.

The paper, fragile yet luminous, carries a sense of renewal. As the colors blend and expand, they mimic the way grace enters our lives — softly, unexpectedly, and with warmth that gathers over time.

This work reflects the belief that even the simplest materials can hold profound beauty and meaning. Like small blessings woven into ordinary days, Blessing offers a quiet reminder of light descending into life.

The choice of coffee filter paper is deliberate and foundational to the series’ meaning. As an everyday, disposable material, its transformation into enduring art elevates the mundane to the spiritual. The hand-dyeing process introduces color that bleeds and settles unpredictably, much like the unexpected arrival of grace in life. The folding and layering techniques create a visual depth that suggests the accumulation of quiet, sustained belief over time, giving the fragile paper a surprising structural resilience. The stitching acts as a visible prayer, connecting the individual fragments of the series—I, II, and III—into a cohesive narrative of faith that is continually being pieced back together.

Artist Reflection

Blessings can mean many things — abundance, health, joy, or love. Yet at the heart of the idea is a universal longing for grace. I believe blessings descend from above, and by dyeing, drying, and folding each piece of paper like a small gift, I hoped to send a blessing back into the world.

The Blessing Series explores spirituality through material simplicity. By transforming ordinary paper into sculptural forms of cascading light, Jaclyn Bae weaves prayer, reflection, and gratitude into contemporary installation art. The series connects faith with the tactile, inviting viewers into the quiet presence of grace.

Comments

  1. Everyone has a different meaning of the word "blessing". Some people think a blessing is an abundance of materials, health, happiness or love. Others think of it as a matter of spiritual conditions. However, the commonality is that we all desire (or want) blessings. I believe that blessings come from above. To portray that, I dyed, dried and ironed paper to fold it like a gift box-hoping it will bless this world
